Darren T. Oystreck

Dr. Darren T. Oystreck is an Orthoptist in the Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus unit at IWK Health Centre and Chair of the Clinical Vision Science program at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on congenital and genetic disorders of ocular motility. Through clinical research and multidisciplinary collaborations, he investigates rare conditions affecting eye movements including congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders. His work aims to improve the diagnosis, characterization, and management of pediatric vision disorders such as strabismus and amblyopia.

Donald E. Mitchell

Dr. Donald E. Mitchell is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. His research has focused on the development and plasticity of the visual system, particularly the effects of abnormal early visual experience on visual function. Following initial studies of humans with early abnormal visual input as a result of refractive or oculomotor conditions such as astigmatism, anisometropia or strabismus he changed tack to the use of animal models.

Kevin Duffy

Kevin Duffy is a Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. He completed his PhD at McMaster University, then did post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. His lab at Dalhousie investigates factors that govern development of the visual system, and that regulate neural plasticity across the lifespan. He and his collaborators have leveraged principles of synaptic plasticity to develop a novel treatment for amblyopia that involves pharmacological retinal inactivation. His lab is funded by the CIHR and NSERC.
